How are you assessing when to start the Doodling Dragons books? Is this done before formal schooling?

Taylor D'Amico's avatar

I introduce these as the first step of reading lessons, which may happen before formal lessons start depending on the child. Reading lessons can come before formal schooling or at the same time. I follow the child's lead on their readiness.

Like the child asking to learn to read?

Yes. So this could happen before the age of 6. If they don’t ever ask, I begin between 5-and-a-half and 6.

I just bought Doodling Dragons to try out on my almost 5 year old thanks to this! I'm hoping my second attempt at teaching a child to read will be more joyful this time around, but I do believe in the power of phonics for empowering little readers. I think I just need to keep my head on my shoulders with how long the process can take.

I'd love to hear how it goes! You're absolutely right about setting expectations for the time it takes. Some children take to reading intuitively while others steadily develop the ability over time. Bringing joy into lessons is great for both types of learners!
